Cat enrichment, play, and vertical space
What's going on
Indoor cats live longer and safer lives than outdoor cats — but only if we give them an environment that meets their hunting, climbing, scratching, and ambushing brain. A bored cat is a cat who finds creative jobs, and you usually don't love their creativity.
What to try
Vertical space
Cat trees, window perches, wall shelves, the top of a wardrobe — anywhere a cat can go up. This single change reduces inter-cat tension, gives shy cats confidence, and lets all cats observe their territory like the small lions they are. Even one tall cat tree in the main living room makes a real difference.
Play on a schedule
Two to three dedicated wand-toy sessions a day. Move the toy like prey — short bursts, then pause, then unpredictable direction changes. Let the cat catch it sometimes. End with a 'kill' and a meal. This is the 'hunt-catch-eat-groom-sleep' rhythm Jackson Galaxy calls 'rhythm of the wild,' and it transforms cats.
Food puzzles and foraging
- Scatter kibble across the floor or on a rug for a 'forage' meal.
- Stuff dry food into a puzzle ball (Slim Cat, Doc & Phoebe's Indoor Hunting Feeder).
- Hide treats around the house for self-directed hunting.
- Snuffle mats made for dogs work great for cats too.
An enriched cat is a polite cat. Channel the hunter; lose the problems.
Rotate, don't accumulate
Have 20 toys and only put 4 out at a time. Rotate weekly. The 'new' toy is the one they haven't seen in a month. This saves money and keeps your cat interested.
Outdoor enrichment, safely
A catio (enclosed outdoor space) is the gold standard for indoor-only cats who want fresh air. Window bird feeders give 'cat TV' that beats almost anything else for entertainment. Some cats can be trained to walk on a harness, though many can't, and that's fine.
What to avoid
- Don't use a laser pointer as the only toy. Always end with a physical 'kill.'
- Don't leave a cat alone all day with nothing to do, then wonder why they tore up the toilet paper.
- Don't free-feed kibble in a bowl by the wall. That's not a meal — that's a sad fueling station.
When to ask for help
