A Free Resource From Always & Furever

Behavior & training, written for the dogs and cats who came from somewhere else.

Practical, positive-reinforcement guidance for the first 24 hours, the first three weeks, and the long, beautiful chapter that follows. Built for adopters, fosters, and anyone in love with a rescue.

Our philosophy

Every animal can learn. Patience is the only tool that always works.

This library exists because the dogs and cats who come to Always & Furever — and the families who choose them — deserve real, science-based, positive-reinforcement help. Not corrections. Not collars that hurt. Not the tired old advice about being the alpha.

Every guide here is written for someone living with a rescue animal in real time. Most pages cover the first few weeks and the most common challenges — house training, fear, introductions, settling in. None of these guides replace a vet or a certified behaviorist for serious cases. But for almost everything else, this is a great place to start.

A note before you read on

The guidance in this library is shared as reference material only. Every animal is an individual with their own history, temperament, and needs — and reading these guides does not guarantee that your pet's specific behavior challenges will be resolved.

Please don't rely on this library alone. For aggression, severe anxiety, biting, sudden behavior changes, or anything that worries you, consult your veterinarian first to rule out medical causes, and then work with a certified positive-reinforcement trainer or veterinary behaviorist for personalized support.

Fosters, adopters, and pet parents are always encouraged to seek professional guidance when their situation calls for more than a starting point. We're rooting for you and your pet — and we're here to help connect you with the right people when you need them. Reach us through alwaysandfurever.org/contact.

Imagine a place where old dogs, sick dogs, scared dogs, and the ones the world gave up on — get to be loved out loud. That's the whole idea. That's all of it.
