What Makes Us Special
Patience
Unlike other shelters, we refuse to give up on any of the animals that enter our doors. No matter what, our team devotes as much of our time, energy, and funding as possible to keep our animals healthy and safe.
Protection
Even after our animals find their furever homes, we vow to help you take care of them, if necessary. We conduct frequent follow ups and can help connect you to resources as needed. One day, we hope to reduce barriers between adopters and essential pet care, including veterinary costs and food purchases.
Positivity
Plans change and mistakes happen, but it’s our job to persevere and to learn. What began in Spring Hill, Kansas, has grown into a life-saving mission serving animals across Osawatomie, Kansas City, Wichita, and beyond. We’re here to be the model of forgiveness that these animals need, which helps us become better, kinder people.
Adoption Process
If you’re ready to join our community of adopters, we’re glad to have you! Before you bring your furry friend home, though, there are a few steps you’ll need to follow. Start by filling out an application and then we will begin:
- Reference Checks – This helps us understand you as a pet owner. If this is your first pet, don’t worry—this step helps us match you with the right animal.
- Virtual Home Check – The size of your home isn’t important, as long as it meets your pet’s needs.
- Background check – We need this information to check for any past animal-related incidents. All animals deserve secure, happy homes.
- Medical Team Consultation – Ensuring the health of you, your new friend, and any current pets you have is essential.
- Meet-and-Greets – We’ll repeat this step as necessary to verify that you and your desired companion are compatible.
Future Plans at the Homestead
A fortunate turn of events led Always & Furever to purchase 40 acres next to our original Little Red Barn. What began as a simple letter to the landowners is now a dream come true! Our main focus will be on building smaller facilities for puppies, cats, reactive animals, and on-site medical care. Then, we can shift focus to hosting community-centered activities on the property that encourage kind humans to adopt animals in need. This could include puppy yoga, pancake breakfasts with dogs, bingo nights with cats, and more.
Our mission continues to grow. Today, we proudly serve pets and people across the region, with key locations in Wichita, Osawatomie, and our soon-to-be Homestead East in Kansas City, MO.
Our sweet adoptable seniors, 🌚Calliope and🗿Stone at the LWB sure do love their daily walks. It is one of their favorite activities! If you're someone who never misses a daily walk, these are your perfect pals! They'll happily join you every time, and make sure you don't skip a day either! 🤣😉

☁️🐾 Little Wichita Barn Afternoon Update 🐾☁️
What a wonderful day it has been here at the Little Wichita Barn!
We've been blessed with beautiful, cool weather all day long. The skies have stayed cloudy, but thankfully the rain has held off, making it the perfect day for extra outdoor time. Our sweet senior pups have been soaking up every minute of it with plenty of walks, fresh air, enrichment KONG time, toy time, and lots of opportunities to stop and smell the flowers along the way. 🌼❤️
We've also been busy getting some adorable 4th of July-themed photos ready for you all! 🇺🇸🎆 Our dogs are excited to show off just how ready they are to celebrate as part of a family of their own. Maybe they'll be spending Independence Day with you... or maybe you'll be too excited to wait until July and bring them home even sooner! 🏡✨
Tomorrow morning, we'll be welcoming the St. Francis Outreach Mobile Veterinary Team to the LWB! 🩺🐶🐱 Some of our foster pups will be receiving surgeries, while several of our shelter dogs and cats will be getting exams, treatments, and other veterinary care. We're incredibly grateful for their partnership and all they do to help our animals stay happy and healthy.
Today, though, one very special moment belonged to our newest boy, Brooks. 🤠🤎
Since arriving about a week and a half ago, we've been slowly learning more about him and helping him discover what it means to feel safe, loved, and at home. We've offered him all kinds of toys, stuffies, and enrichment activities. While he has shown some interest, it has often felt like part of him was still unsure if he was truly allowed to enjoy them. Today felt different.
While we were relaxing together in the living room with his favorite enrichment ball, a chew bone, and a few toys, Brooks suddenly got up and trotted toward his room. Then he stopped at his bedroom door and let out a little whine.
Curious, I walked over to him. He stood there looking up at me with those big, sweet eyes and whined again.
When I opened the door, Brooks quietly walked into his room and carefully picked up a tiny candy corn stuffy. Then he gently carried it all the way back to the living room and added it to the little pile of things we had been enjoying together.
A few moments later, he got up again, returned to his room, and came back carrying a little red fox toy, proudly adding it to the pile as well.
It may seem like a small thing, but for Brooks, it felt like something much bigger. It felt like trust. Like comfort. Like a dog beginning to understand that he is safe, that these things belong to him, and that it's okay to be playful, curious, and completely himself. Watching him make that choice all on his own was incredibly special, and we couldn't be prouder of him. ❤️
For now, we're enjoying this peaceful weather, happy pups, and all the little moments that remind us why we do what we do. 💙
