Freedom Drivers: every rescue starts with a ride.
Freedom Drivers are the volunteers who move pups (and the occasional cat) from shelters and surrender situations to safety, one leg at a time. You bring the car and the compassion; we handle the planning.
Three kinds of rides, one mission
Almost every animal Always & Furever saves needs a ride to get here. Drivers pick the rides that fit their schedule and their vehicle.
Freedom Rides
Relay transports out of overcrowded or high-risk shelters (Wichita, Oklahoma City, Iowa and more) to A&F or to a partner rescue that has tagged the animal. A route is broken into legs so no one drives the whole way.
Recent example: Wichita → Emporia → Olathe → Boonville → St. Peters, five legs shared by five drivers for Ralph, Spicy and Shaky.
Homecoming Deliveries
Bringing a pup from one of our barns to a new foster or furever family, or meeting an inbound driver to finish the last miles home.
Recent example: Oliver, a 103-pound yellow Lab, rode from the Little Wichita Barn to Spring Hill to meet his foster family.
Local & Medical Runs
Short, often same-day trips between the Little Red Barn (Spring Hill), Land of OZ (Osawatomie), the Little Wichita Barn and our veterinary partners, including emergency runs to Blue Pearl.
Recent example: McGuire's morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up for a vet appointment, both covered by one local driver.
From "driver needed" to "FILLED!" in five steps
An animal is tagged
A&F or a partner rescue commits to a pup in a shelter, or a foster, vet or barn needs a ride.
The route is mapped
Our transport coordinator splits the trip into legs of roughly 30 to 125 miles with meet-up towns and times.
The request is posted
Details go up in the private Freedom Drivers Facebook group: animal names, sizes, temperament and crate needs.
You claim a leg
Comment on the post with the leg you can cover. The coordinator confirms and shares hand-off contacts.
Hand-off and home
Meet the previous driver, load safely, send a quick photo update, and pass the pup to the next leg or their new home.
What a posted route looks like
Each leg is claimed by a different driver. Take one leg or several; every mile counts.
Posts also include transport recommendations, for example "scared in the shelter, transport end-to-end in the provided crate" or "very friendly, tether on a dog bed."

Already a Freedom Driver? We need you to register too.
For years, drivers signed up by emailing our coordinator and returning a paper agreement. We are moving everything into one secure database so we can match rides to drivers faster, keep vehicle and contact details current, and make sure every driver has a signed agreement on file. Every current driver, please complete the form below once, even if you have been driving with us since the beginning. It takes about five minutes.
Freedom Driver Registration & Agreement
One form for new applicants and current drivers. It collects your contact details, vehicle information, availability, and your electronically signed Volunteer Driver Release of Liability Agreement.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to drive the whole route?
No. Almost every freedom ride is a relay. Legs are typically 30 to 125 miles and about 45 minutes to two hours. Claim one leg, or string a few together if you like a longer drive.
How will I hear about rides?
Every request is posted in the private Always & Furever - Freedom Drivers Facebook group with dates, times, meet-up towns and animal details. Comment on the post with the leg you can cover. Urgent local vet runs are posted there too, sometimes with only a few hours' notice.
I don't own a crate. Can I still drive?
Yes. Many rides come with a crate that travels with the animal from leg to leg, and posts tell you when a dog can simply ride tethered on a blanket in the back seat. Tell us what you own on the form so we can match you well.
Is there any pay or reimbursement?
Freedom Drivers are volunteers and cover their own fuel; Always & Furever does not compensate drivers. Consider keeping a mileage log, since volunteer mileage for a nonprofit may be tax-deductible. Ask your tax advisor about your situation.
What happens at a hand-off?
Meet at the agreed spot, confirm the animal's name, move them leash-on or crate-to-crate (never loose in a parking lot), and send a quick photo or text to the coordinator so the next driver knows you are on the way. Animals are never left unattended in a vehicle.
Can I bring my kids or my own dog?
Passengers must be older than 16 under the Volunteer Driver Agreement. Please leave your own pets at home; many transport animals are stressed, recovering from illness, or unvaccinated.
I already emailed my information years ago. Why register again?
We are moving from email threads and paper agreements to a single database. Re-registering makes sure your phone, vehicle and plate details are current and that your signed agreement is on file digitally.
We would love to have you on the road with us
